An Introduction to Somerset Rural Youth Project

For those of you who are unfamiliar with our work, let me provide you with a brief introduction to ‘SRYP’ and what we are working to achieve with the young people of Somerset.

SRYP was set up in 1997 with the intention of providing something constructive for young people in rural areas of the county. We aim to show them that there are many options in life, that they can get access to good training and employment opportunities, that they have the same options to them as young people in urban areas and perhaps most importantly of all, that each individual is a valued member of their community and have much to offer.

We are a charity and voluntary youth work organisation, our work is project based and mobile, which means that in general we go to the young people, rather than them coming to us.

In general terms we work with young people aged 13 to 25, in rural areas with a population of less than 3,000 people. We cover issues such as transport, bullying, rural isolation, sexual health, training opportunities, substance use, crime reduction and much, much more.

One of our main aims is to consult with young people to identify their needs and aspirations, and by working in partnership with their community and other agencies we endeavour to make their hopes and dreams a reality.

So following an invitation from members of your community and with the support of South Somerset District Council we are looking to start project based work with the young people of Seavington in mid September. Although we are a youth organisation, we would be more than happy if the whole community felt that they are welcome on our sessions and would be more than happy if we could recruit adult volunteers, so that after our project is completed, the processes that we have put in place for the youths will be become sustainable both now and in the future.

Looking forward to seeing you all in September!
